As a former Division III NCAA athlete that was more interested in girls, my fitness, and playing football, my only wish of the internet in the year 2005, was the existence of an online knowledge base that could give me a summarized and insightful version of the lengthy material a sociology major (Freud, Nietzsche, Descartes, you know all the heavy hitters) is required to read. After months of scouring the web for the right content, and realizing my investments in cliff note copies of this content wouldn’t turn my C into an A it finally hit me that I would have to build it myself….. Dom.com.
As it would turn out, the domain name dom.com was already owned by a company that had unlocked the mysteries of consumer power….the Richmond (Old DOMinion) power company. This small hiccup, along with having no experience for building and launching websites, put my dreams of creating this place on hold.
Fast forward a few years; an MBA, 7.5 years of experience with Dell, Amazon/AWS, a career transition from finance to technology-focused roles, toss in a passion for learning new skills, an extreme curiosity for how things work, a pinch of humor, and a whole other host of learning experiences have re-ignited my vision.
So here we are in its next evolution…..domitdown.com; this site is a forum for me to express myself as well as, a place for me to display my learning journey and skills development. For me, learning a new skill means taking countless reps. Malcolm Gladwell’s book “Outliers” was the first time I heard of the 10,000 hour rule (TL:dr anyone can become an expert in anything in 10k hours) and when I look back at the skills I feel capable in, there is a theme of 10k hours and deliberate practice.
As THE generalist’s generalist (my background includes behavioral therapy, B2B sales, finance, operations, product management/development, IT, database design and front-end data visualization, blogger, CTO/CRO, and now business owner), I have learned that my broad background provides me a unique opportunity to share my learning with others.
In 2021, I have given myself the goal of helping 1 million people over the course of my life. This website is my forum to project the knowledge I have aquired in a wide range of topics spanning from diet, exercise, mental health, technology tools, ran-dom facts, and data insights. By creating content I hope to create a feedback loop and mechanisms to further my development as well. I hope you enjoy it and share it with me should you find a nugget of wisdom or humor on this site!!
